Now how online bingo stands from the results of the National Gambling Study

February 5, 2009

Every quarter, the UK Gambling Commission conducts a survey about the habits of people who engage in online gambling. The survey is called the National Gambling Study and it also includes our favorite game of online bingo. See what the study shows and hoe online bingo is doing in today’s economy. Is online bingo really doing well during these tough times? Or is it about to go down like the rest of the industries? Let’s find out more below.

According to the National Gambling Study, online bingo networks are surviving the recession. Most of the sites are able to maintain their market share. It was the market research firm ICM Omnibus who conducted the survey. And according to the firm, 1.1% of the 8,000 people surveyed played the game of online bingo last January 2009. In fact, online bingo resulted as the top six in the most popular game in online betting activities. It was the National Lottery that got the top spot with 7.1% who played last month. The second and third spots were the National Lottery scratch cards and sports betting that were both at 2.4%. Other lotteries and poker came in the fourth and fifth spots, both as 1.7%.

Last quarter, the number of online gamblers had increased significantly. At the same time, 9.7% of those surveyed said they have gambled either through interactive TV, mobile phone, or online in January. Back in 2007, it was only 8.8% in January. Thus, this is ought to be a significant increase according to the UK’s Gambling Commission. Nevertheless, the increase was mostly due to the number of sold National Lottery tickets through the Internet and not because of other online games such as online bingo.

Online bingo activity was steady which meant the online bingo market was slow. Nevertheless, it was reported to be growing steadily yet slowly. That’s not bad at all. We know how the saying goes, “slowly but surely”. So hopefully, we’ll see online bingo to continue to rise in the following quarters and years to come.
