The Kidlington Charity Bingo Club is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. They have been active for a long time in raising funds for charitable causes in the Oxford area, and they recently raised ₤1 000 to donate to the Churchill Hospital’s Oxford Cancer Centre.
This came after an appeal from the hospital to raise ₤2 million to assist in the equipping of a ₤109 million cancer centre. Now I know that ₤1 000 is a drop in the ocean when it comes to figures in the millions like these mentioned. But every little bit counts, and you have to bear in mind this is a small, private bingo club, manned by members of the public who get together to raise funds. I believe thy have done extremely well in their efforts and it just goes to show the big heartedness of UK bingo players. Families in the area are also being invited to take part in a fundraising walk later this year to add to this charitable drive.
The bingo club treasurer is seventy-seven years old, and she said that they decided to support this charity as virtually everyone knows someone who has had cancer or have had it themselves. This is an illness that touches every ones lives. Ann Bowler is also from Kennington and she is spearheading the campaign to raise the ₤2 million. Her husband also died of cancer after battling with the illness for twenty three years. She is delighted by the contribution made by the bingo club. She said that the money they donated will go a long way to improving the quality of lives of patients who will be treated at the cancer centre. Isn’t it strange, the amount of peoples lives that the simple game of bingo can make a difference to?
